Southern Odyssey: A Private Three-Day Journey from Queenstown to the Wild West Coast and on to Marlborough
Day 1: Queenstown to Glacier Country
Your unforgettable journey commences in the adventure hub of Queenstown, nestled amidst the majestic Southern Alps. We'll journey over the historic Crown Range, once a bustling gold mining area, before passing through the charming village of Arrowtown.
After traversing around the spectacular Hawea and Wanaka lakes, we'll ascend the Haast Pass, witnessing the dramatic shift from the dry tussock lands of Otago to the lush rainforests of the West Coast.
Arriving in Glacier Country, prepare to be captivated by the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, where massive rivers of ice dramatically descend into temperate rainforests, creating a sight unlike any other.
Choose your adventure for the day: Embark on a guided walk through the rainforest, marvel at the glaciers from a scenic viewpoint, or take an exhilarating helicopter flight for a bird's-eye view and a thrilling snow landing on the glacier (optional, additional cost). Your night will be spent in either Franz Josef or Fox Glacier village, immersing you in the magic of this icy wonderland.
Day 2: Glacier Country to Punakaiki
After exploring the wonders of Glacier Country, including the enchanting Lake Matheson, famed for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, your adventure continues north along the wild and rugged West Coast road.
The journey takes you to Hokitika, the former capital of Westland and a once-thriving gold mining town. Discover the town's vibrant arts and crafts scene, where the legacy of greenstone (pounamu) and gold still shines.
As you venture further north, witness the ancient remnants of the last Ice Age – the kettle lakes, formed by melting ice sheets.
Reaching the coastal haven of Punakaiki, you'll encounter the awe-inspiring Pancake Rocks and blowholes, sculpted by the relentless forces of nature. Take a leisurely stroll along the beach, soaking in the dramatic scenery before settling into your comfortable accommodation for the night.
Day 3: Punakaiki to Marlborough
On the final day of your unforgettable journey, we'll traverse the breathtaking landscapes of Paparoa National Park and Nelson Lakes. Your knowledgeable guide will lead you through the historic Buller Gorge, a former gold mining hotspot, before reaching the renowned Marlborough region.
Here, amidst the picturesque vineyards and rolling hills, you'll bid farewell to your Canterbury Trails guide, carrying with you cherished memories of a truly extraordinary adventure through New Zealand's South Island.
