Southern Odyssey: A Four-Day Private Journey from Queenstown to Christchurch via Glaciers and Alpine Wonders
Day 1: Queenstown to Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki/Haast
After a visit to the country’s prettiest village, Arrowtown, we'll journey north, ascending the rugged and remote Crown Range, a historic gold mining route.
Our route then winds alongside the picturesque shores of Lake Hāwea and Lake Wānaka, showcasing the region's natural beauty. Ascending the dramatic Haast Pass, you'll witness a remarkable transformation from the dry tussock lands of Otago to the lush rainforests of the West Coast.
Descend into the Haast River Valley, home to diverse wildlife and a powerful river. Tonight, we'll rest at the tranquil Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki or Haast, where you may have the unique opportunity to observe the rare Fiordland crested penguin.
Day 2: Glacier Country Immersion
Today, immerse yourself in the unique glaciated landscapes of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Short walks offer breathtaking views of these icy giants as they descend into lush rainforest. For the adventurous, an optional helicopter flight (additional cost) provides a bird's-eye view of the glaciers, culminating in a thrilling snow landing.
You can also choose to explore the trails leading to glacier viewpoints, marveling at their awe-inspiring descent against the backdrop of the Southern Alps. Tonight, you'll rest in the heart of this natural wonderland, either in Franz Josef or Fox Glacier village.
Day 3: Franz Josef Glacier to Arthur's Pass National Park
Venture north along the wild West Coast, following rivers that flow towards the Tasman Sea. Witness the ever-changing rainforest landscape, dominated by diverse fern varieties. We'll stop in Hokitika, a former gold-mining town now renowned for its vibrant arts and crafts scene showcasing greenstone (pounamu) and gold treasures.
Journey through the breathtaking mountain valleys, marveling at the engineering feat of the Otira Gorge as the road winds its way up. Arrive in Arthur's Pass National Park, a haven of biodiversity, where beech forests, tussock valleys, and lush rainforests coexist. Your guide will unveil the park's natural wonders, showcasing its unique flora and fauna. Your accommodation for the night will be in the heart of this alpine paradise.
Day 4: Arthur's Pass to Christchurch via TranzAlpine Train
Begin your day by exploring the diverse landscapes of Arthur's Pass National Park, from eastern beech forests and tussock valleys to the lush rainforests of the west. Discover the park's glacial wonders, surrounding tussock basins, vibrant flowering herbs, and alpine grasses.
