The southernmost wine region in the world
Central Otago is the southernmost wine region in the world, and its Pinot Noir is celebrated wherever it is poured. This half day stays in the Gibbston Valley, twenty-five minutes from Queenstown and known locally as the Valley of Vines, and visits three cellar doors chosen for contrast rather than for volume.
Chard Farm, then Kinross
The first is Chard Farm, one of the pioneers of the region, reached by a narrow road cut along the cliff above the Kawarau River and among the most dramatically sited cellar doors in the country. The second is Kinross, the shared cellar door for a group of small Central Otago producers, where you taste very different winemakers side by side in one sitting rather than driving between them, and where a shared platter of regional produce is laid out over lunch. The tasting can be taken across the meal if that suits the party better.
Mora, where the day slows down
The third is Mora, tucked into a garden and cottage setting near Lake Hayes, where the day slows to a stop. With your own driver-guide nobody misses a glass, and the pace is set by you rather than by the clock.
Morning or afternoon
The day runs in either direction, morning or afternoon, with the order reversed to suit. All tastings are for guests aged eighteen and over; younger guests are welcome on the tour.
