What does a small-group day tour cost?
A small-group day tour is the most accessible way into guided touring in Canterbury. You share the vehicle with no more than eight guests, follow a set route, and the cost of the guide and vehicle is spread across the group. Full-day small-group tours include hotel pickup and drop-off in Christchurch, a café lunch, morning or afternoon tea, every entry and cruise ticket, and an expert driver-guide from start to finish. Why does a private tour cost more?
On a private tour, one vehicle and one guide are committed to your party for the whole day, and on a multi-day journey for the whole trip. Nothing is shared, so the cost cannot be spread across other travellers. That is the honest arithmetic behind the difference.
What you gain is control. Departure times, the pace of the day, where you linger and what you skip are yours to decide, and the order of a day can change around the weather. What does a private multi-day journey cost?
Our private journeys between Christchurch and Queenstown start from NZD $940 per person. Rates are per person and set by the size of your party, so what you pay depends on how many are travelling together. Tours run for a minimum of two guests, and children aged 2 to 12 travel at half the adult rate.
The one-day journey via Aoraki/Mount Cook is the simplest version. Two, three and four-day journeys add overnight stays, the West Coast glaciers or Arthur's Pass, and more unhurried time in each place. Fully bespoke itineraries are quoted individually, because the route, the length and the inclusions are built around you.
What should a tour price include?
A fair quote is clear about what is and is not covered. Before comparing two operators, check each of these:
- The vehicle and guide. Is the vehicle exclusively yours, and does the same guide stay with you throughout?
- Transfers. Is pickup from your accommodation included, at both ends of the journey?
- Activities. Are cruises, entry fees and scenic flights included, or quoted separately?
- Meals. Which lunches, if any, are part of the price?
- Accommodation. On a multi-day journey, is your accommodation included or arranged separately?

What moves the price up or down?
- Party size. Private rates are per person, so the cost per head changes with the number travelling.
- Length and distance. A four-day journey through the glaciers costs more than a single day via Aoraki/Mount Cook.
- Activities. Cruises, scenic flights and gourmet lunches are real costs, included at their standard published rates.
- The vehicle. A high-specification vehicle costs more to run, and across a long touring day it is most of the experience.
Is a private tour worth the extra cost?
It depends on what matters to you. If a fixed route and good company suit you, a small-group tour is excellent value and in no sense a lesser experience.
