Christchurch to Queenstown: Every Route Compared

Christchurch to Queenstown: Every Route Compared

Most South Island itineraries connect Christchurch and Queenstown, and how you travel between them shapes the whole trip. Fly and you see clouds. Drive yourself and someone misses the views. Here are the routes we run as private journeys, compared honestly.

The classic: one day via Lake Tekapo and Aoraki/Mt Cook

The inland road south crosses the Canterbury Plains to the turquoise of Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd, then runs beneath Aoraki/Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest peak, before dropping through the Lindis Pass to Central Otago and Queenstown. Our one day private tour via Mt Cook covers it with an expert guide, walks where the weather invites, and every photo stop yours to call.

The unhurried version: two days with a night at the mountain

Same country, double the reward. Staying near Aoraki/Mt Cook buys you evening and morning light on the mountain and some of the world's best stargazing skies. The two day private tour is the one guests write to us about afterwards.

The grand loop: through Arthur's Pass and the glacier coast

For travellers with two to four days, the West Coast route is the South Island at full volume: across the Southern Alps at Arthur's Pass, down the wild coast past the glaciers, through rainforest and over the Haast Pass to the lakes of Wanaka and Queenstown. Choose two days, three days or four days depending on how much you want to walk, cruise and linger.

Which one is right?

One spare day: go via Mt Cook. Two days and a love of mountains: stay the night there. Three or more days, or a return journey already booked another way: the glacier coast is unforgettable. Every journey is private, with one expert driver-guide handling all the logistics, luggage and stories from door to door. Rates are per person by group size; details on each tour page, or talk to us and we will shape the route to your dates.
