Everything worth knowing before a day trip to Arthur's Pass: the route, the stops that matter, the kea, the weather, and the two best ways to do it.
Arthur's Pass is Canterbury's alpine heart: a national park of peaks, waterfalls and beech forest about two hours from Christchurch, reached by one of the South Island's most beautiful roads. Here is what a quarter century of guiding has taught us about doing the day well.
The route is half the day
The road climbs out of the Canterbury Plains into the high country, past glacier-fed lakes and the extraordinary limestone formations at Kura Tawhiti, Castle Hill, a place of deep cultural significance to Ngai Tahu and a favourite photo stop on any itinerary. Beyond the village, the lookouts above the Otira Gorge stare straight down one of New Zealand's most dramatic road passes.
What to do at the pass
Short walks are the secret. The waterfall tracks and beech forest paths near the village deliver enormous reward for very little effort, and your guide will choose the best for the day's weather. Keep an eye out for the kea, the world's only alpine parrot: intelligent, curious and famously cheeky around parked vehicles.
When to go
Every season works. Summer gives long days and alpine wildflowers, autumn paints the valleys, and winter snow makes the whole crossing look like a model railway. Mountain weather changes fast in any month, which is the strongest argument for going with someone who reads it daily.
Two good ways to do it
Our TranzAlpine and Arthur's Pass tour (NZ$940 per person) pairs the famous train one way with a guided road journey back, the best of both. The Arthur's Pass scenic drive (NZ$755 per person) keeps the whole day on the road for maximum flexibility. Both are capped at 8 guests and include hotel pickup, cafe lunch and afternoon tea. For something rarer, our private high country farm tour adds a genuine working station to the alpine day.
What to bring
A rain jacket and a warm layer in any season, sun protection in all of them, and shoes you can walk a forest track in. Everything else, including the local knowledge, is provided.
