Canterbury Trails is a New Zealand company that provides an exclusive personal guiding service for the discerning traveller. Our aim is to give our guests a memorable insight to the places we visit, the sights we see and the people we meet.

Our goals are:

  • To practice sustainable tourism and to continually review and improve our policies and practices particularly in regards to our vehicles.
  • To promote the rich natural and cultural history of New Zealand through informative guide commentaries.
  • To develop conservation and environmental awareness by taking guests to unique places and to observe rare creatures and plants.
  • Care for land, sea and nature by treading lightly and leaving no trace.
  • Travel safely showing care and consideration for all.
  • Respect culture showing an open heart and mind.
  • Support local products, and purchase recyclable materials.
  • The use of reusable cups rather than disposable.
  • Recycle waste and compost where appropriate.
  • Adopt energy efficient lighting in the office environment.
  • Employ informed guides and maintain high standards of training.
  • Support the Department of Conservation under our DOC concession.
  • Support Kea Conservation, Protect Hectors Dolphins and the Summit Road Society trapping project.

Canterbury Trails and our staff accept no responsibility for any loss or damage as a result of any Act of God, changes in weather or services, or otherwise. While care is taken in the selection of services we make no representation as to any services provided or places visited. Canterbury Trails Ltd will not be responsible if any services are not available due to inclement weather conditions. While we do our best to accommodate any disruptions, our services may be altered or cancelled due to any unforeseen circumstances.

Canterbury Trails requires a minimum of two passengers for a tour to go ahead. Single travellers can be accommodated by paying for two people.

Babies under two years of age can travel free of charge. Please bring your own food for your baby. Children aged between 2 – 12 years are also welcome. We have car seats and booster seats available. Children pay 50% of the adult price.

Canterbury Trails reserves the right to alter prices, schedules and/or inclusions advertised without prior notice. All prices are in New Zealand dollars and include GST.

Payment is required at the time of booking. We accept most major credit cards via our booking system. A credit card fee applies.

Canterbury Trails reserves the right to charge a cancellation fee and/or recover all disbursement incurred on all tours where less than 7 days; notice of cancellation is given. Cancellations made between 7 days of departure will incur a 50% cancellation fee and cancellations made within 48 hours are non-refundable. If your local activity/tour is cancelled (due to unsuitable sea or weather conditions) a partial refund on that portion of the tour may apply. We recommend our passengers have travel insurance.

The comfort and safety of our clients is of paramount importance to us. If the weather conditions are not suitable some of our tour activities may be cancelled by the operator up to 15 minutes before their scheduled departure. Canterbury Trails will offer a partial refund if your local activity is cancelled and no other suitable alternative can be arranged. Your guide will provide details on the day.

New Zealand is renowned for its abundance of wildlife however, there is no guarantee that local wildlife, particularly whales or dolphins, will be seen on these tours.

Canterbury Trails requires the full names of every passenger travelling on our day tours. While we can accommodate most levels of fitness on our tours we also reserve the right to refuse any passengers if we are not completely satisfied that it is practicable and safe for them to participate. Passengers must advise if they have any COVID symptoms, physical conditions or concerns that may affect their safety or enjoyment of our tours. Passengers must wear seat belts and follow all reasonable instructions given by our staff before, during and after the tour. Passengers are responsible for the safety and protection of their own personal possessions at all times.

Canterbury Trails reserves the right to use an alternative vehicle (without prior notice) than is advertised due to any unforeseen circumstances, including health and safety or mechanical reasons.

Where stated, Canterbury Trails will pick up and drop off passengers from most major central city accommodation properties. We request passengers to be waiting in the lobby prior to the stated pick up time to avoid any delays. For those who are staying outside of the central city a private tour will usually be required, or alternatively you can make your own arrangements to meet us at an agreed pickup point in the CBD. Please be aware that due to events beyond our control, e.g. heavy traffic congestion and roadworks within central Christchurch may delay our tour departures or arrivals may be delayed by up to 30mins.

New Zealand’s weather can change very quickly so it is best to be prepared We recommend that passengers wear sensible sturdy footwear and we suggest they bring a warm jacket.

Please make us aware of any dietary requirements when making your booking. We can cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten free etc.
