A day tour to Akaroa, the only settlement attempted by the French in New Zealand, passes through the beautiful landscapes of the Banks Peninsula. This region was formed following violent eruptions of volcanoes over 6 million years ago and the picturesque town of Akaroa itself sits in an ancient volcanic crater.

Akaroa Map

You will travel to Akaroa NZ over the beautiful Banks Peninsula on a high summit route which gives glorious views of farmlands, Akaroa Harbour, Lyttelton Harbour, the Canterbury Plains, Christchurch City and the distant Southern Alps as well as remote bays indenting the coastline. On arriving at the main wharf in Akaroa we will introduce to Black Cat Cruises where you will be briefed for your Swim with the Dolphins Experience. This opportunity is truly memorable as these unique mammals choose to interact with you in the water.
You will have an opportunity to wander around the charming 175 year old French harbour side village of Akaroa with it’s museum of settlers’ history, art and craft shops and studios before enjoying lunch at an award winning cafe.
On the journey back to Christchurch we visit the Cheese Factory at Barry’s Bay, the only one remaining on the peninsula from a bygone era, the Little River Art gallery and if time permits Vince’s Gem Stone Museum.

What to bring

What should we wear and take on our Day Tour

Check the weather, dress accordingly and if necessary carry extra appropriate clothing. If you think that the clothing you have with you in New Zealand is inadequate/ unsuitable for your tour let us know, at least, the day before departure, so we can lend you some.

South Island weather is extremely variable. Sudden changes are not uncommon! As we include walks on our tours it is advisable that you wear comfortable clothing suitable for being active and, as you will be in the mountains or on the ocean, a wind proof top is a must. It is advisable to wear layers of clothing that can be added and/or removed. The following is recommended:

wind/shower proof jacket that will keep you dry in a sharp shower
Sweater or jacket suitable for cooler weather, made of material that retains warmth when damp from sweat or drizzle).
hat (type depending on weather)
Guests on hiking tours should have a rainstorm proof jacket.
DAY PACK (or bag you can carry and have both hands free)
sunscreen (high SPF)
water bottle
lip balm
camera with extra card, spare batteries.

“Canterbury Trails was a lot of fun, our driver Irene was very knowledgable about the area in Akaroa and Christchurch. The swimming with dolphins was the highlight of our trip. She stopped at some areas where we could stop and take pictures. Lunch was delicious and the customer service was excellent. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone traveling…”
