Canterbury Trails Responsible Tourism Pledge

Canterbury Trails is a New Zealand company that provides an exclusive personal guiding service for the discerning traveller. Our aim is to give our guests a memorable insight to the places we visit, sights we see and people we meet in New Zealand. We understand that, through their activities all businesses have an environmental and a social impact and Canterbury Trails is no exception. However, we do endeavour to minimize any adverse effects and provide an environmental and socially responsible service to our guests.

The three goals of Canterbury Trails pledge are:

  • To practice sustainable tourism and to continually review and improve our policies and practices particularly in regard to our vehicles.
  • To promote the rich natural and cultural history of New Zealand through informative guide commentaries.
  • To develop conservation and environmental awareness by taking guests to New Zealand's unique, special places and to observe rare creatures and plants.

The following are examples of what we do in practice:

  • Ensure all vehicles are regularly maintained and mechanically sound.
  • Support of local produce/products, purchase recycled and/or in bulk (where viable) and home bake
  • Dry the guide uniforms without using a tumble dryer
  • Use glass cups rather than disposable cups
  • Recycle waste and compost where appropriate
  • Adopt energy lighting in the office environment
  • Employ informed guides and maintain 'in house' information support
  • Support DOC and operate under DOC Concession
  • Regularly review and recce tours to find new and/or better experiences.
  • Take a last look before we leave an area so the next visitor does not know that we have been there?

Please enjoy your visit and your outdoor experience.

Please protect the environment for your own sake, for the sake of those who come after you and for the environment itself.
